West African Network of Election Observers (WANEO) as part of its core operational vision, mission and objectives of existence, hinges on the respect for the inalienable rights, freedoms and liberties of the people to freely participate actively in all democratic processes in West African Countries. This is greatly in line with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Charter which forms the pivot of the African Union Charter on Human and People’s Rights of democratic governance and election in a democratic society. As such the need to advance the cause of respecting human rights and freedoms of the people in democratic processes across West Africa.
WANEO as a key organ of democratic society in West Africa is mandated under the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 53/144 of 9th December 1998 to promote and protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in West Africa and beyond. In light of all the above, WANEO is greatly poised and committed to working with all relevant stakeholders at the local, national , regional, continental and international arena in ensuring that the human rights and freedoms of the people who own the democracies of West African states are highly respected and protected in all democratic processes in West Africa. The observance and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people is key to delivering transparent, peaceful and credible elections in every democratic process, hence, the unrelenting policy advocacy and awareness raising on the prominent need for all governments and institutions of West African states to fully respect the human rights and freedoms of the people who own the democracies of West African states for sustainable development, peace and stability in West Africa. WANEO in collaboration and partnership with all relevant stakeholders at the local, national, regional, continental and international levels of democratic governance and development is determined and resilient to help in strengthening and empowering all democratic institutions of West Africa towards ensuring the respect for and observance of universally recognized human rights and freedoms of the people inherent in a genuine and working democracy.
